One of the latest news online is President Obama’s defense on the government’s response to the oil spill. According to CNN daily news online, the president will be visiting Louisiana coast on Friday to observe personally, the efforts being taken for the cleaning up and to have a talk with the officials over there regarding the capping of the under sea oil gusher located in the Gulf of Mexico. Since the spill on 20th of April this year, this will be his second visit to the region. There is a buzz in the latest news headlines that the visit is an attempt to fight off the criticism that the government has been facing. The Obama administration has been viewed by many as very relaxed and casual in the face of such an environmental disaster.
According to a national news report, Obama in a news conference in the White house said that “I take the responsibility. It is my job to ensure that everything is completely done to shut this down. That doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy. That doesn’t’ mean it’s going to happen right away or the way I’d like it to happen. That doesn’t mean we aren’t going to make mistakes.” He further added that both he and the federal government were fully engaged. In an apparent attempt to make his and his family’s concern more pronounced, he even shared how his daughter Malia was constantly asking him if he had “plugged the hole yet”.
According to the latest national news federal estimates determined on Thursday that the spill is most likely to be the largest in the history of the United States. The oil has already coated some parts of Louisiana though what will be the impact of this spill is still unclear. The “top kill” procedure is an attempt to stop the flow of oil from the well under water. A daily news online journal reported how this is done using a fluid called drilling mud. This drilling mud is used as a lubricant and counterweight both during drilling operations. Latest news headlines show how in the current case it is being pumped in large amounts into the head or the “top” of the leaking well so as to stop the leakage, if this is achieved, the well will be sealed with cement.
The national news also stated that BP announced on the same day that the “top kill” procedure had been suspended for more than sixteen hours before it was restarted that afternoon. This and related news headlines had got many negative responses from both local officials and observers. Doug Suttles, the chief operating official on site had apologized for being so slow in giving any response on the latest development related to the spill. He said the reason for the delay in announcement and had been nothing more than the team’s complete involvement in the operation.
CNN stated in its daily news online how it was also told in a conversation with a White House official that though many people inside the white house knew about the delay, Obama’s knowledge of the same wasn’t confirmed. The official insisted that micromanagement of every progress and official related to the disaster management was not possible for the president. Adding that there was no official announcement in the news headlines from the white house regarding the same as it did not look like a major issue and was a part of the operation activity. According to BP officials, the process might take another day or two to complete. However, there is no certainty as to if the “top kill” will be a success in stopping the oil flow or not.
