The news headlines say that the Music city witnessed incessant flow of muddy waters from the overflowing Cumberland River. The banks of the swollen river poured muddy waters into the city, causing havoc in famous downtown streets.
The residents of city were stranded everywhere and rescuers were working hard to save people from their homes full of muddy water. The rescuers used boats along with Jet Skis to pluck stranded people. The death count due to the weekend storm has reached 28. The figures are from three states. The rapidly increasing levels of waters have caused deaths to as many as 17 people in Tennessee and about 10 people in Nashville. The officials fear that death rate could increase more.
The reason for these flash floods, the record-breaking heavy rains had caught many people off-guard and had forced them to flee from their own homes and their hotels in frantic attempts to save themselves. The storm over the weekend has led to dumping of about 17 inches of rain in the Nashville area and that in turn has led to a rapid rise of the Cumberland River and its parts. According to National Weather Service meteorologist Mark Rose, the bloated river crested Monday evening at almost 12 feet above the flood stage in Nashville. It is not expected to fall below the flood stage of 40 feet before Wednesday morning. The Metro Nashville Davidson County Fire Chief Kim Lawson said, “Do we suspect to find more people? Probably so. We certainly hope that it’s not a large number.”
Some important tourist spots were also flooded. Some top tourist spots reported flooded include the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Grand Ole Opry House among others. But the historic Ryman Auditorium which is the former home of the Grand Ole Opry, is reported to be out of immediate danger. Same is the case with the recording studios of Music Row.
According to various sources, about 1500 guests staying at the Gaylord Opryland Resort as well as Convention Center situated at about five miles east of downtown were forced to evacuate and move to a safer high school in the vicinity. The heavy floods have caused shutting down of one of the largest hotels of nation and convention centers.
The Wyndham Resort along the river near Opryland was submerged under 10 feet deep water. The restaurant chairs floated in water along with some crates carrying the wine glasses. About 500 trapped vacationers were rescued by the authorities with the help of volunteers. Help for rescue also came from an amphibious tour bus and a canoe. The rescuers had to wade through numerous underwater hazards that included submerged cars along with other hazards. Some cars had their tops hardly visible as they were covered with muddy flood waters.
With receding of floodwaters in different areas, more victims came to the front. The city spokeswoman, Gwen Hopkins said that a body was found outside a Nashville supermarket and that too in a wooded area while a woman was discovered dead in her home in western part of town. The storm is also believed to be the cause of death of six people in Mississippi, four in Kentucky, and one in western Tennessee.
